St Petersburg, the place I call home, where people come to vacation. St Petersburg or St Pete as the locals call it is also nicknamed the "The Sunshine City" with an average of 360 days of sunshine each year.
The city was co-founded by John C. Williams of Detroit, Michigan who purchased the land in 1876, and Peter Demens, who brought the railroad to St Petersburg in 1888. Legend has it that the two flipped a coin to name the city and Peter Demens won thus naming the city after his birthplace St Petersburg Russia. John C. Williams got to the name the first hotel, which he named after his birthplace Detroit, Michigan, the Detroit Hotel still exists downtown St Petersburg to this day.
Generally considered the first commercial airline, in 1914 airplane service across Tampa Bay began between St Petersburg and Tampa. Air service was no longer needed when the Gandy Bridge opened in 1924, allowing cars to drive back and forth between St Petersburg and Tampa.
St Petersburg has continued to grow to become one of the most livable cities in the United States. As of 2004, the population according to the U.S. Census Bureau is 249,090 making St Petersburg the 4th largest city in Florida. And while everyone's first assumption is that the median age should be high, the fact is that the median age has dropped to 39.3.
St Petersburg consists of 244 miles of shoreline and has the largest municipal marina in the Southeast.
